Generic Name: Chorionic Gonadotropin
Brand Name: Novarel, Pregnyl
Pregnyl is used for treating fertility problems in certain women who have not gone through menopause. Treating certain testicular development problems and stimulating the development of secondary sexual characteristics in certain patients.
Pregnyl is a hormone. Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) stimulates cells in the testicles to produce androgens and in the ovaries to produce progesterone. Androgens cause the development of male secondary sexual characteristics (eg, hair growth, deepening voice) and may cause the testicles to drop. HCG acts like luteinizing hormone (LH) by stimulating ovulation (release of an egg) in women.
For many women, sexual desire goes up and down over the years, often tied to changes in relationships, stress, and physical changes like pregnancy and menopause. But roughly 10% of women deal with a low sex drive that causes them distress. Given the success of drugs to treat erectile dysfunction, drug companies have sought a comparable drug for women.
Female sexual response is complex. Sexual problems may be due to difficulties with arousal, a lack of desire or both. Many factors can influence sexual desire in women.
If you’re experiencing changes or difficulties with sexual function, consult your doctor. In some cases, medications, hormones, creams, clitoral stimulation or other treatments may be helpful.
